What is a Service Grid?

A 'Service Grid' is a distributed application environment for business applications and:

  • Is based on SOA principles, technologies, and standards
  • Delivers a mechanism for scaling on multi-core, multi-CPU, and multi-server systems
  • Enables integration of disparate technologies, programming languages and systems
  • Provides self-healing functionality

It's important to point out what a "Service Grid" is not. A service grid:

  • Works with an ESB but is not an ESB itself
  • Works with application servers but is not an application server itself
  • Works well with Web services but is also able to support local service calls

Rogue Wave® Hydra is a service grid that provides these additional capabilities:

  • Host services written in different programming languages including C++, Java, BPEL
  • Support for SOA standards like SCA (service component architecture) and SDO (service data object)
